In memoriam Foppe van Mil

With deepest sadness we have to announce that Foppe van Mill, ESCP fellow,  passed away last Saturday. It is almost impossible to describe what Foppe brought for clinical pharmacy in general and ESCP in more specific.

Jan Willem Foppe van Mil was born on July 16th, 1950, in Waalwijk, Netherlands. He studied pharmacy at Utrecht University and obtained his pharmacy degree in December 1977. He started his professional career at a community pharmacy at the health-centre in Lewenborg, Groningen. In 1981 he took over the pharmacy in Zuidlaren, a village in the Northeast of the Netherlands. From 1993 till 2000 he worked also part-time at Groningen University. In January 2000 he concluded his PhD on Pharmaceutical Care. From 2000 on he was a pharmacy consultant on Pharmacy Practice Research and Pharmaceutical Care, and worked occasionally as interim managing pharmacist in community pharmacy.

In 1985 he founded Pharma Selecta, an independent and critical Dutch drug bulletin. Between 1994 and 2002 he was member of the Committee for continuing professional education of the section Community Pharmacy of FIP. He was co-author of the book ‘Pharmacists and Aids, an unknown territory’ (1997). Between 1996 and 1999 he was Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe (PCNE), and there-after the professional secretary. Since 2000 he was Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal for Clinical Pharmacy (IJCP). He was teaching medication review, community pharmacy practice and the writing of scientific papers and abstracts in several national and international continuing education programs and an invited speaker or workshop-moderator to many national and international conferences.

Foppe was a very active member of ESCP. As mentioned above, he was often an invited speaker and a workshop-moderator to the ESCP Symposia or spring workshops, was often a member of an Organizing Committee or a Scientific Committee. He chaired the Communication Committee for many years, has been financial auditor. Many young pharmacists have learned from him and through his teaching Foppe influenced the way pharmacists practice pharmacy nowadays. For all Foppe had done for ESCP, he was appointed Fellow in 2012.

Foppe died of cancer on July 18th, 2020, at home in Zuidlaren, leaving behind his husband and great love Roelof Bijleveld, with whom he shared over 40 years of his life. We lost a very nice person, a great friend, a good cook. It was always a pleasure to be with him.

We are grateful for all Foppe has done for pharmacy and for the patients, all over the world.

We will keep a warm memory of Foppe.
