Spring workshop 2021 in Zurich “Malabsorption and malnutrition – a challenge for clinical pharmacists”

The International Spring Workshop of the ESCP will take place in Zurich, Switzerland, from 26 - 27 April 2021.

Many gastrointestinal disorders like Crohn’s disease or interventions such as bariatric surgery lead to an altered absorption of food as well as drugs. Affected patients may need specific drug therapy and nutritional supplements such as antidiarrheal medicine, proton pump inhibitors or vitamins. The risk of nutritional deficiencies depends on the type of surgical procedures, the location and the extent of the resection. Short and long-term complications are common and close monitoring is required. Enteral or parenteral feeding must be started with caution in malnourished patients in order to avoid a refeeding syndrome. The lectures and interactive workshops will focus on the following topics:

  • Malnutrition and the effect on the immune system

  • Nutritional risk assessment scores and complications of malnutrition

  • Enteral and parenteral nutrition and drug administration

  • Refeeding syndrome and other complications

  • Physiological and pharmacokinetics changes after gastrointestinal surgery

  • Short bowel syndrome & Crohn’s disease

  • Pharmaceutical care for stoma patients

  • Patient care around bariatric surgery

The workshop is suitable for pharmacists working in various settings including hospitals, community pharmacies, nursing homes, drug information centers, teaching, research, etc.

Take the opportunity to participate in a workshop in Switzerland, enjoy discussions with specialists and share experience with colleagues from all around Europe.

In case that there will be another COVID-19 wave in April next year and a lock down in Switzerland , the workshop will be held in a digital format.
