Welcome from Derek Stewart, the new ESCP President

I write these words in my first few weeks of being President of ESCP to introduce myself and to wish you a very prosperous 2021. I was born in Aberdeen, Scotland a few decades ago (!!) and studied Pharmacy at Robert Gordon’s Institute of Technology (now Robert Gordon University) following by a Master’s degree in Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Aberdeen. I then joined academia at Robert Gordon University and completed a part time PhD on patient outcomes, supervised by Professor Janet Krska. I remained at that university as Professor of Pharmacy Practice until April 2019 when I made a major life decision to move to Qatar. I had been collaborating with the health service and the university in Qatar for a number of years and really enjoyed visiting the country. I am now Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Practice at Qatar University and the Manager of Academic Quality Affairs for the health colleges. I have been part of ESCP for many years, having chaired the Research Committee for three years until 2019 and I joined the General Committee earlier this year. Beyond work, I really enjoying exploring this beautiful country, reading crime novels and spending time with my wonderful dog, Jimmy, who is really my therapist! I have two children who are based in Scotland; Cameron is a veterinary surgeon and Caitlin in a pharmacist.

It is an honor and highlight of my career to take on the role of the President of ESCP. I do so with a little trepidation but also with a great deal of excitement and hope to bring commitment, energy, drive and a little fun to the role. I am indebted to the immediate past President, Professor Bart van den Bemt for his leadership. I also wish to acknowledge the great work of the individuals in the International Office and the society committees who work tirelessly behind the scenes. I look forward to working closely with each and every one of them.

According to our website, ESCP is an “international leader in advancing quality and innovation in clinical pharmacy education, practice and research” with the mission “to promote, support, implement and advance education, practice and research in clinical pharmacy in order to optimize outcomes for patients”. As a society, we need to refresh and update our activities aligned with delivering on this mission and being the global leader in clinical pharmacy. We need to understand and meet the needs of you, our members, to enable you to deliver the very best care. As a society, we will build on the positive evidence base which supports the delivery of clinical pharmacy. This foundation has been strengthened by the further evidence of the impact pharmacist and pharmacy team accumulated throughout the Cornoavirus pandemic.

I urge you to renew your ESCP membership and to encourage your colleagues, peers and acquaintances to do the same or for them to become members of the society. I am interested in your views of how the society can better serve you so please contact me at any time through the International Office. Please get involved in the organization through participating in committees, webinars, workshops, symposia etc. I will also regularly contact you with updates and developments etc.

Very best wishes for 2021

Derek
